Dancing fingers

Strangely, all the typing photos were of vintage typewriters and flush-keyboarded laptops. Not quite so easy for the digits to dance on.

There’s a magic in touch typing. A muscle memory, a mental call-back to lessons, yes actual typing lessons, at secondary school. A module in “Secretarial Studies” no less. A genuine life skill.

I smile as my teenage children — digital natives, furious thumb-tappers, emoji-experts — watch me work from home. Speech to text software now so advanced that all but the fewest entries pass uncorrected, unedited. Will my clacking keys become obsolete? Will their children even know what QWERTY is?

“How do you do that without looking dad?”

“Practice.”
